SquatSpace History - Social Centres
In a survey of homeless people conducted by Shelter NSW over the Olympic period, about one-fifth of homeless people interviewed indicted they would be sleeping that night in a squat or a car. The reality is that people squat empty buildings in an attempt to solve their own housing needs.
From a Social Centres Autonomous Network Media release:
we are sick of not having a place to organise as activists, and of having to pay landlords and venues to get one. We are sick of being told to "move on" by the police, and of the government trying to tell us what we can and can't do with our lives. We are tired of the money market yelling that we can't leave the house if we haven't got the cash, that our social lives should arrange themselves around the shining distractions of consumerism. We are bored at work.
we have decided to do something about it
COMING SOON: a place to call our own - a brand new social centre at a convenient city location for a different outlook.
